Ölstilen utvecklades i USA mot slutet av 1970-talet som "American Pale Ale". I början var användandet av amerikansk Cascade-humle dominerande. Därefter har odlandet och användandet av nya moderna humlesorter med de för öltypen önskvärda tonerna av citrus, frukt och blommighet spridits över hela världen. Ölet ska ha en tydlig humlekaraktär där moderna humlesorter bidrar med citrus, frukt och blommighet, framför allt i aromen. Ölet får dock inte vara obalanserat humligt, utan det ska ha ett tydligt maltstöd från ljus malt med inslag av viss karamellighet. Färgen är relativt ljus. Ofta används renjäsande jäststammar för att hålla fruktigheten på en låg nivå.

Aromhumlad med moderna humlesorter ska ge en fruktig humlearom på medium till hög nivå. En liten karamellig maltton bör finnas som kompletterar humlen. Gyllengul till ljust kopparfärgad. Köldgrumling är tillåten. Humlesmaken ska vara hög. Amerikanska och andra nya humlesorter används för att ge karakteristiska citrusaktiga och fruktiga nyanser. En liten till medium karamellmaltighet ska balansera humlesmaken. Friska/fräscha fruktestertoner bör förekomma i låga till höga nivåer. Ingen eller mycket liten diacetylton. Beskan ska vara medium, men får absolut inte dominera. Medium kropp. Ska ge en ren och krispig känsla, ej sötsliskig.
